Ration Card

Your access point to subsidised foodgrain under the Public Distribution System — and now usable across state lines.

What It's Actually For

A ration card confirms your household's eligibility for subsidised foodgrain and other essentials under the Public Distribution System (PDS), and also often serves as a household residence/identity proof for various welfare schemes.

How to Get It

  • Apply through your state's Food & Civil Supplies Department portal or local Fair Price Shop / Taluka office, with household and income proof.
  • Card category (Above Poverty Line / Below Poverty Line / Antyodaya) depends on your household's income and eligibility criteria, which vary by state.

How to Correct a Mistake

  • Corrections (adding/removing family members, address changes) are filed through the same state department portal or local office.

Common Problems

  • Fair Price Shop denying your entitled quota — you can complain to the local Food & Civil Supplies office, and this is also covered by CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in) as a fallback.
  • Migrant workers unable to access rations outside their home state — this is exactly what the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme is meant to solve, letting you draw rations from any Fair Price Shop nationally.

Quick Answers

Still wondering about...

Can I use my ration card in a different state than where I registered?
Yes, if the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme applies in both states — call 14445 if a Fair Price Shop refuses to honour it.
