Driving License

Your legal authorization to drive — and a widely accepted photo ID in its own right.

What It's Actually For

A driving license authorises you to legally operate a specified category of motor vehicle, and is issued by your state's Regional Transport Office (RTO) through the centralised Sarathi/Parivahan online system.

How to Get It

  • Apply for a Learner's Licence first, online via parivahan.gov.in (Sarathi service), including an online learner's test.
  • After the mandatory minimum gap (typically 30 days), apply for the permanent license and appear for a practical driving test at the RTO.

How to Correct a Mistake

  • Corrections and renewals are filed through the same Sarathi portal — select the relevant service (correction/renewal/duplicate) and your registered RTO.

Common Problems

  • License expiring unnoticed — driving on an expired license can attract penalties under BNSS/motor vehicle law; renewal can be applied for even shortly after expiry via a grace-period provision, but don't let it lapse for long.
  • RTO appointment slots unavailable / test delays — a common, genuine bottleneck; if excessively delayed, this can be escalated via the PM Grievance Portal.

Quick Answers

Still wondering about...

Can I drive on an expired license while my renewal is pending?
There's a grace period for renewal shortly after expiry, but driving on a long-expired license is not legally valid — renew promptly rather than relying on this.
