How to Actually Document a Protest Without Putting Yourself at Risk

Good documentation protects everyone — but how you do it matters as much as whether you do it.

Prioritise wide, contextual shots (what led up to a moment, not just the moment) — this is far more useful as evidence than a single dramatic close-up clip stripped of context.

Back up footage immediately if you can — cloud upload, sending to a trusted contact, or both — rather than keeping the only copy on the device that might be seized.

Be mindful of filming other protesters' faces in ways that could expose them to risk later; when possible, focus documentation on official conduct (police, barricades, orders being given) rather than identifying fellow protesters.

Quick Answers

Still wondering about...

Should I timestamp my videos?
Yes — most phone cameras embed timestamps automatically; just make sure the device's clock/timezone is actually correct.

Adhikar is an independent citizen-awareness platform, not a Government of India website and doesn't take a position on the NEET protests themselves — this is general information about rights every student already has, not legal advice for a specific situation. For that, contact a lawyer or the free legal aid helpline (15100).
