Ask & Insist On
- The specific grounds for your arrest — you have a right to be told (BNSS Sec. 47, Art. 22(1)).
- To have a relative or friend informed of your arrest and where you're held (BNSS Sec. 48).
- A medical examination if you're injured or unwell (BNSS Sec. 51).
- No handcuffs or restraint beyond what's genuinely necessary (BNSS Sec. 43, 46).
Remember
- You cannot be held more than 24 hours without being produced before a magistrate (BNSS Sec. 58, Art. 22(2)).
- If you can't afford a lawyer, the court must assign one at State expense — ask directly (BNSS Sec. 341, Art. 39A).
- Note the time, place, and officers involved as soon as you're able to.
