Aadhaar Card

Your 12-digit unique identity number — the foundation most other documents and services now check against.

What It's Actually For

Aadhaar is a 12-digit biometric-linked identity number issued by UIDAI, used as proof of identity (not citizenship) for opening bank accounts, getting a SIM card, receiving government subsidies/welfare benefits, and increasingly as a base document for other IDs.

How to Get It

  • Visit any Aadhaar Enrolment Centre (banks, post offices, and dedicated centres) with proof of identity and address.
  • Biometric data (fingerprints, iris scan, photo) is captured on-site — enrolment itself is free.
  • Your Aadhaar letter/e-Aadhaar is generated after verification, typically within a few weeks.

How to Correct a Mistake

  • Most demographic corrections (name, address, date of birth, mobile number) can be done online at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, or in person at an enrolment centre for changes requiring fresh document verification.
  • Address updates are the easiest and can be done fully online with a valid address proof document.

Common Problems

  • Enrolment/update rejected due to document mismatch — the name/address on your supporting document must closely match what you're entering.
  • Biometric authentication failures for manual labourers or elderly people with worn fingerprints — UIDAI's system does have fallback options (OTP, iris) for this.
  • Mobile number not linked, blocking OTP-based online updates — requires an in-person visit to link it first.
